Hardwood flooring in St. Augustine, FL
If you're looking for hardwood flooring, it's important to get both the material and the installation right. At Amazing Floors Florida, we install and refinish hardwood flooring for homes and businesses in St. Augustine, FL and nearby areas. Whether you're starting from scratch or updating existing floors, we'll help you choose the right option and make sure it's done properly from start to finish.

Is hardwood right for your space?
Hardwood is one of the most durable and long-lasting flooring options you can choose. It adds warmth, character, and value to a home, and with proper care, it can last for decades. If you want something that holds up over time and can be refinished instead of replaced, hardwood is usually the better option.

Installation & refinishing
We handle both new hardwood installations and refinishing existing floors — new installations, sanding and refinishing, custom staining and color matching, and repairs and touch-ups. If your current hardwood is scratched, worn, or outdated, refinishing can often bring it back to life without a full replacement.

Learn moreKnow your species
No matter the finish protecting your hardwood, you cannot change the density of the wood itself. Many scratches in hardwood are actually dents in the material. The Janka scale measures a wood's ability to withstand denting — the higher the number, the more durable the species. Common domestic species in order of increasing hardness include red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, and walnut.

Sawn types
Hardwood comes in different cuts, depending on how boards are sliced from the log. These cuts affect the look, feel, and stability of the floor.
- Plain sawn (flat sawn) — the most common cut, with a classic "cathedral" grain pattern. Most familiar, though slightly more prone to expansion and contraction with humidity
- Quarter sawn — quartered logs sawn perpendicular to the growth rings. Produces a straight-grain pattern with a distinctive "fleck" (especially in white oak). More stable and more durable, at a higher price
- Rift sawn — cut at a different angle from quarter sawn for a very straight, consistent grain with no prominent flecking. The most dimensionally stable cut, popular for modern interiors. Most expensive
- Live sawn (European cut) — cut straight through the log, showing a mix of plain, quarter, and rift sawn in the same wide boards. A natural, rustic look, with good stability and efficient use of the log

Floor grading
Hardwood grades describe the appearance of the wood, not its quality or durability. Higher grades have a more consistent, clean appearance with fewer knots and mineral streaks; lower grades show more character. Neither is "better" — they're different looks for different rooms and styles.

Prefinished vs. unfinished
Prefinished hardwood comes with a factory-applied finish, so it's ready to install as soon as it arrives. That means faster installation, a consistent finish, and less on-site mess. Many prefinished floors include slight bevels or grooves between planks, which allow for minor subfloor inconsistencies. Prefinished boards are installed as-is, so occasional minor marks in the surface are possible during installation.
Unfinished hardwood is installed raw, then sanded and finished on-site. This allows full customization of stain color and sheen and gives a smooth, seamless look — especially in large or open spaces. It takes more time and labor, since finishing is done after installation over several days.

Engineered vs. solid
Engineered hardwood is built from multiple layers of wood with a hardwood veneer on top, making it more stable and more resistant to moisture and temperature changes. It offers flexible installation options and can be used in areas like basements or kitchens. It can typically be sanded and refinished a limited number of times, depending on the thickness of the veneer. Higher-quality engineered products can be as expensive as solid hardwood.
Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood. It offers a timeless, natural look and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifespan. It's more sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature, so it performs best in climate-controlled environments. Solid hardwood is generally more expensive and requires a more involved installation.

Moisture maintenance
Maintaining proper moisture levels matters for hardwood. The ideal wood moisture content is roughly 6–9%, and room humidity should stay between 30–50%. Fluctuations in humidity can cause wood to expand or shrink, leading to damage over time. A humidifier or dehumidifier can help keep the environment stable and protect your floors.

Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
Yes. Along with new installations, we sand and refinish existing hardwood, do custom staining and color matching, and handle repairs and touch-ups.
It depends on the size of the space, the species, and whether it's prefinished or site-finished. We'll give you a realistic timeline during your estimate.
Solid hardwood is typically nailed into a wood subfloor, so over slab we generally recommend engineered hardwood, which is more dimensionally stable and works with glue-down installation.
With proper care, hardwood floors can last for decades. Solid hardwood can be refinished multiple times, and engineered hardwood offers strong longevity when well maintained.
